All right

Bourbon blues on the street, loose and complete

Under skies all smoky blue green

I can't forsake a dixie dead shake

So we danced the sidewalk clean

My memory is muddy, what's this river that I'm in?

New Orleans is sinking, man, and I don't want to swim

Colonel Tom, what's wrong? What's going on?

You can't tie yourself up for a deal

He said, Hey, north, you're south, shut your big mouth

You gotta do what you feel is real

Ain't got no picture postcards, ain't got no souvenirs

My baby she don't know me when I'm thinking bout those years

Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire

Sucking up to someone just to stoke the fire

Picking out the highlights of the scenery

Saw a little cloud that looked a little like me

I had my hands in the river, my feet back up on the banks

Looked up to the lord above and said, Hey, man, thanks

Sometimes I feel so good I got to scream

She said, Gordie, baby, I know exactly what you mean

She said, she said, I swear to god she said

My memory is muddy, what's this river that I'm in?

New Orleans is sinking, man, and I don't want to swim

My dad used to always play this song on the guitar so my child hood was pretty much me colouring with crayons while my dad played this song in the basement

It's unfortunate this band didn't get big in the States. Oh well, all the more for Canada to enjoy.

I had to do a project on natural disasters in high school, and we got bonus marks if we used a song that had lyrics relevant to our selection ex. Rock You Like a Hurricane. I chose to do hurricane Katrina, because my family and I went on vacation in Orlando the day after she hit the coast, and the weather was crazy. I chose this song to go along with my slideshow and my teacher and the class loved it! "New Orleans is sinkin', man, and I don't wanna swim."

Pretty much a perfect rock song to me....

As a visitor from the USA, and one who knows almost nothing about you folks, ...our great neighbor to the north, ...... I am excited to find out about this band, and at the same time sorrowful to know that Gord Downie passed away a couple of years back..... RIP Gord. What an amazing and awesome kick ass band and I know you guys were and forever will be proud of them, and their body of music. I'm just excited to have a "new" to me anyway, musical group that KNOWS HOW TO PLAY WRITE AND SING GREAT MUSIC ! I can't find much in the new stuff we get in the states anyway to get excited about, but I'm definitely stoked to get to learn and sample now, all  of the "Tragically Hip" songs that you folks already know by heart.  These fine musicians are now added to my list of great Canadian groups/artists that I really appreciate and know the GUESS WHO, NEIL YOUNG, RANDY BACKMAN/BTO, GORDON LIGHTFOOT ( a national treasure for any country, lucky you guys ! ) , Celine,  Bryan Adams, and I know those are only a few of a gazillion you probably know- but at  least I know of a few of your groups , and know I will be searching for others since I'm obviously not well informed and there's no doubt plenty of other great entertainers that I know nothing about from "this neck of the woods" ...... .... Merry Christmas to all, and in the words of "Tiny Tim" himself....."God bless us , every one "  Cheers.
All the best to Gord, so sorry to hear the news. Prayers to you, your family and friends. You have all been the soundtrack to my life, first tape I ever bought was The Hip
3:34 - I love how he hit same note as a guitar: 🗣"SWIM!!!"

Rest easy gordon. I first heard 38 years old when i was around 14 and came a little late. You sadly passed 4 months after i found out who you were. Already learned little bones, blow at high dough on guitar :)
Firstime I heard this song I was sitting in the car in a really cold winter morning at a site with my buddy Alberto hotboxing a joint and blasting music
